I spent the rest of the day (8/19/08) updrilling as needed on the right aileron, deburring and cleaning everything up. After applying
a light coat of selfl-etching primer on the inside surface of the aileron, I started riveting the right aileron together. That's always
a nice feeling.
August 23 , 2008 ... I received my dimple dies yesterday, so I was able to finish up the retaining ring for the
inspection plate. The right photo shows the finished installation.
August 25 , 2008 ... Today I had high hopes of drilling the aileron and flap hinges on the left wing, but I ran
into a rude delay. While fitting the aileron to the wing, I found that I had mis-measured when I cut the aileron to length. Somehow,
between the drawings and the aileron I added an extra 11/64ths of an inch. That would have been easy to fix if the aileron tip rib
were not already installed. But. because the aileron is fully assembled, I am going to have to completely re-assemble the left aileron.
Bummer! Tomorrow I will be ordering a new aileron skin and a set of aileron ribs from Sonex.
When I rebuild the aileron, I am
going to leave the tip rib off until after the wing tip is installed, and the aileron is fit to the wing. That way the aileron
tip angle, and the aileron length will match the wing perfectly.
