August 11, 2008 ... Before assembling the wing skins I need to install the mounting flange for the lower wing access panel.
I fabricated that with .040 aluminum plate. The first step was to cutout the flange from the sheeting and deburr. I used the
center point to draw the location of the access cover plate and the opening itself. I also established the location of the rivet holes,
and access cover screw holes, drilled and deburred.
I bore a hole in the center of the plate, then using my router table set-up (with a 1/4 inch, straight fluted bit in the router),
I carefully removed the center material from the ring. Great care must be taken to work the metal through the bit gently. Also, to
reduce the possibility of having my part vibrate on the router table, prior to making my cut, I extended the router bit up so the
cut would take place on the upper third of the bit (closer to the shank).
To locate the rivet holes on the skin, I Clecoed an access plate to the bottom of the flange ring and slid the plate into the hole
I enlarged previously on the bottom wing skin. I placed and secured the retainer ring to the wing skin to match drill the rivet
holes.
