May 31, 2008 ... I spent the bulk of my wing time pre-drilling the left wing upper skin. I fabricated two padded
wing cradles that will allow me to set a Clecoed wing on my benchtop. This came in handy as it allowed me to lay the wing flat while pre-drilling
the row of holes over the main spar caps.
I was miserably short on Clecos, but Bryon Stewart, a local aviator and RV7 builder
generously loaned me several hundred of his. Thanks Bryon!
An army of Clecos!.
June 2, 2008 ... Today was a very productive day in the airplane shop!
I set the wing airframe back on the workstands and leveled (plumbed) it up again. I attached the left wing lower skin to the airframe
and pre-drilled the rear spar, then working from the center rib (#7) outward, I pre-drilled and Clecoed all of the ribs.
After
that, I was ready for a break from all the drilling so I cut and shaped the right aileron counter-weight. I finished out my
day, enlarging the inspection cover hole, on the bottom wing skin, to 5 inches. I am going to rivet in a re-inforcing ring with nutplates,
so that I can install the inspection cover flush with the wing skin.
June 3, 2008 ... I only got a couple hours of wing time today, so I pre-drilled and Clecoed the lower wing skin to the
main spar cap. But that completes all of the left wing skin pre-drilling. With both skins Clecoed, the wing is now very rigid!
The skins that came in the kit fit perfectly; all the laser drilled holes centered on the ribs, and the edges landed perfectly on the main and rear spars, and the root ribs. The only place that did not match perfectly was at the tip of the rear spar where the fiberglass wingtip attaches. Fortunately, that will be easy to adjust.
