May 5, 2008 ... Today, I made the compound angles on both aileron skins, and deburred, cleaned, and alodined the remaining
aileron ribs (except for trhe tip ribs.) I measured and started to pre-drill the holes in the right aileron skin. Then, I ran
into another problem, and it is the first mistake I have found on the plans. The drawings call for the outboard row of rivets
(top side) to be located 1/2 inch from the edge of the aileron. But when I fit the right aileron tip rib and pre-drilled it, the holes
fell within 1/16th of an inch of the tip rib (upper) flange edge. That does not leave a sufficient amount of material for the rivets.
Come to find out the tip rib flange is only 9/16ths of an inch wide. Bummer!
May 6, 2008 ... Fortunately, the aileron skin is a few inches longer than the overall length called for in the drawing,
so I measured and re-cut the compound angle on the right aileron skin, which removed the outer edge pre-drilled holes. This time I
pre-drilled the outer edge holes but I inset them 5/16ths of an inch. I am setting the right aileron aside for now until I order
a new tip rib. The compound cut on the left aileron is now complete .
May 8, 2008 ... Time out for an announcement! My daughter gave birth to our first grandchild; an 8 lb., 0 oz. baby
girl, 20 inches long. Her name is "Autumn." Hmmm ... before long I will have a cute little junior aviator making airplane noises
with me!
May 12, 2008 ... While my "wing" time in my shop today was productive, it was not without errors! Fortunately, none
of the mistakes were serious.
First mistake was in measuring the rivet hole locations on the bottom of the aileron. (More on that
later.) The second mistake ... I mis-measured the length of the cutout for the aieron drive plate. I guess I just wasn't focussed
enough today. Just another reminder to check, and re-check all of the measurements against the drawings. Third mistake was very minor.
The rib I used for the center has the flanges facing outboard, rather than inboard as shown on the drawings.
