October 20, 2007 ... Predrilled and updrilled all of the parts for the right wing, Rib #9, then deburred, cleaned and Alodined.
October 22, 2007 ... I gained some unexpected "wing time" today. So I assembled the right #9 rib components, and did
a final cleaning of the main and rear wing spars. I also had to go back and predrill the upper holes on the brackets. I forgot
those when I was fabricating the brackets. That shows the benefit of a good review of the drawings before moving on. I think
I am ready to align the main spars .... maybe tomorrow.
October 23, 2007 ... I started bright and early aligning the main spars today. Something great is happening here .... (a.)
I am blessed with a great case of "Beginner's Luck"; (b.) My accuracy with the drawings has been extremely good;
(c.) the pre-made parts from the Sonex factory are laser drilled perfectly; or (d.) all of the above. All 5 holes line
up PERFECTLY! Updrilling the wing mount block holes should be no problem. Unfortunately, I had to lay my project
aside for today, as I came down with a bad case of the flu. (Bummer!)
October 29, 2007 ... Today is the day ... It's time to align the spars and updrill the Wing Bolt Mount blocks. There may
be a better way I haven't thought of, but here is how I did it ...
1. I updrilled the 3 alignment holes to 1/8 inch, and inserted
1/8th inch steel rod pins;
2. With pins in place, I securely clamped the spars, assuring that the pins could move in their holes without
binding;
3. Using a 7/32nd inch drill bit (6 inches long), I updrilled the mount blocks, being careful to hold the drill straight,
yet allow the drill bit to "track" with the 3/16th hole;
4. I inspected the backside of the holes and found one hole tracked
perfectly, and the other was off by about 1/64th of an inch. I hoped I would be able to center out the hole on the next
pass;
5. On the centered hole, I used my 15/64 chucking reamer and reamed straight through. (I put oil on the reamer first and frequently
pulled out the reamer to clear the chips). On the slightly elongated hole, I reamed in from each side until the reamer passed all
the way through;.
5. After completely removing the aluminum chips, I used my chucking reamer and bored both holes up to 1/4
inch. In spite of my effort, I still ended up with one hole centered and one very slightly elongated, I am hoping it will completely
center out on the final updrill to 5/16 inch, then up to 3/8 inch.
