December 26, 2006 ... After a month away from my project, I am finally back at it again. 'Gotta be there for your
family when the opportunity arises, 'cause family comes first!
I resumed work on my vertical stabilizer and found that the leading
edge of the fiberglass tip fits poorly in the leading edge of the stabilizer. So, I am building up and shaping the leading edge of
the fiberglass tip with a resin putty called Marine-tex. (Great stuff. And it works easier than Bondo.)
December 27, 2006 ... I sanded out the first coat of Marine-tex and applied a second layer as a little bit
more thickness is needed. While that was curing, I started working on the rib installation on the elevators. See the "Horizontal Stabilizer"
webpage for photos and details.
January 4, 2007 ... After a couple more coats of Marine Tex, I am finally ready for the final shaping and sanding.
The transition from the vertical stabilizer leading edge, to the fiberglass tip, is looking much better now.
January 6, 2007 ... After sanding and fitting numerous times, I used Bond-O glazing to fill any remaining
voids. After a final sanding, the fiberglass tip fit perfectly. I disassembled everything, and primed (zinc chromate) all internal
areas of the vertical stabilizer. The fiberglass tip was primed and wet sanded three times.
